ARTStem invites proposals to support projects during the 2010-2011 academic year that help teachers and students explore the varied intersections between the visual and performing arts and the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Open Dream Ensemble, a professional multi-disciplinary children’s theater group sponsored by the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), is creating a web series for children.

Open Dream Ensemble performs Peril on the Red Planet at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2010. 

The general public had the opportunity to help choose one of the films that will be shown during next season’s “The Big Screen: Treasures from the UNCSA Moving Image Archives” by participating in an online survey. The winning movie is To Have and Have Not (1944), a romance/war/adventure film loosely based on a novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway.

Open Dream Ensemble, a professional outreach program of the University of North Caroloina School of the Ats, is seeking new original scripts for the 2011 season.

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts has awarded two University of  North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) BREATHE projects for summer  2010. This summer’s projects include “You Say You Had a Revolution:  Exploring Paris 1968” with Professors Dale Pollock (Cinema Studies and  Producing, School of Filmmaking) and Joe Mills (Undergraduate Academic  Programs) and “Mayan Culture and the Yucatan Peninsula” with UNCSA  Faculty Instructors Raquel Maqueda and Lynda Moss (High School Academic  Programs) and Diego Schoch (School of Dance).

The Open Dream Ensemble, a professional multi-disciplinary children’s theater group, announces the cast for the 2010 season. The Open Dream Ensemble will perform Peril on the Red Planet, for grades 2-7, throughout North Carolina, as well as selected engagements in other parts of the Southeast during the fall of 2010.

The 2010 Magnolia Baroque Festival will take place on June 16 – 20 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and will feature eight concerts.

As part of the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts’ ACCORD Initiative, the City of Winston-Salem Human Relations Department and the Wake Forest University (WFU) Art Department are collaborating on a visual art project entitled Transforming Race.

Register for the August 2-6, 2010 Lincoln Center Institute International Workshop in Winsto-Salem on the campus of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

As part of the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts’ ACCORD Initiative, The Enrichment Center and students from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), who are also part of Art Tasting, an emerging performing arts organization in Winston-Salem, are presenting an original short play by Ian Antal and Suzy McCalley. The play, entitled “The Yesman,” will be performed Thursday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m. at The Enrichment Center at 1006 S. Marshall Street in Winston-Salem.

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts and the Visual Arts Program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNSCA) announce the recipients of the 2010 William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowships at Penland School of Crafts. Fellowship recipients are students in or recent graduates of the UNCSA Visual Arts Program.

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts is launching its newest project, Dialogues with Guest Artists, in April 2010. Dialogues is a series of conversations with guest artists who have come to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) to work with young artists in training.

The Kenan Institute is proud to present the 2010 schedule for The Big Screen: Treasures from the UNCSA Moving Image Archive.

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council are partnering with New York based Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education (LCI) to establish the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) campus as a regional site for the first LCI International Educator Workshop in North Carolina.

Baylor University has named Dr. Edward B. Burger, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Gaudino Scholar at Williams College in Massachusetts, as the 2010 recipient of the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching, the only national teaching award – with the single largest monetary reward of $200,000 – presented by a college or university to an individual for exceptional teaching.

Kenan Institute for the Arts are launching a film series entitled “The Big Screen: Treasures from the UNCSA Moving Image Archive.” All ticket proceeds will benefit UNCSA School of Filmmaking scholarships.

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts established the LINKS Commissioning Awards in Music to connect professional faculty members from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) with other professional artists across the country and to enhance the reputation of the school as a vibrant center for artistic creativity.  Four LINKS Commissions in Music were awarded and two concerts will take place in January.

Six young performers, recent graduates of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, have been refining their skills as artists and working in classrooms side by side with staff and teaching artists of the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education (LCI) this school year, through The William R. Kenan Jr. Performing Arts Fellowship at Lincoln Center Institute.

The $15,000 grant will enable Magnolia Baroque Festival, the only major early music festival in the Southeast, to feature concerts by composer Johann Peter during its 2010 festival, June 16 – 20, 2010.

Imagine Mars has named the Open Dream Ensemble, a children’s theater group based in Winston-Salem, as one of its four principal partners.

Exactly fifty years ago, the British writer C.P. Snow famously likened the arts and the sciences to “two cultures” so alienated from one another that it imperiled humanity’s ability to intelligently address the world’s problems. Today, the “two cultures” diagnosis is still valid. In this spirit, a new program called ARTStem, a program of the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts, confronts UNC Tomorrow’s mandate for “global readiness” by spotlighting the need to innovate teaching and learning practices that harness together the power of the arts and STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Anything is possible in the theater. Take the Open Dream Ensemble's two latest productions, which will be have their premieres Thursday at the Stevens Center.

The Open Dream Ensemble, a professional multi-disciplinary children’s theater group, will premiere two new original plays on Thursday, September 3, at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Stevens Center. Both shows are free and open to the public, and the audience is welcome to attend one or both productions.
