The Kenan Institute is proud to present the 2010 schedule for The Big Screen: Treasures from the UNCSA Moving Image Archive.

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council are partnering with New York based Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education (LCI) to establish the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) campus as a regional site for the first LCI International Educator Workshop in North Carolina.

Baylor University has named Dr. Edward B. Burger, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Gaudino Scholar at Williams College in Massachusetts, as the 2010 recipient of the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching, the only national teaching award – with the single largest monetary reward of $200,000 – presented by a college or university to an individual for exceptional teaching.

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) School of Filmmaking and Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts are launching a film series entitled “The Big Screen: Treasures from the UNCSA Moving Image Archive.” All ticket proceeds will benefit UNCSA School of Filmmaking scholarships.

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts established the LINKS Commissioning Awards in Music to connect professional faculty members from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) with other professional artists across the country and to enhance the reputation of the school as a vibrant center for artistic creativity.  Four LINKS Commissions in Music were awarded and two concerts will take place in January.

Six young performers, recent graduates of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, have been refining their skills as artists and working in classrooms side by side with staff and teaching artists of the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education (LCI) this school year, through The William R. Kenan Jr. Performing Arts Fellowship at Lincoln Center Institute.

The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts is pleased to announce the 2010 William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowships at the Penland School of Crafts, Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education, and The Kennedy Center for the Perfoirming Arts.

The $15,000 grant will enable Magnolia Baroque Festival, the only major early music festival in the Southeast, to feature concerts by composer Johann Peter during its 2010 festival, June 16 – 20, 2010.

Imagine Mars has named the Open Dream Ensemble, a children’s theater group based in Winston-Salem, as one of its four principal partners.

Exactly fifty years ago, the British writer C.P. Snow famously likened the arts and the sciences to “two cultures” so alienated from one another that it imperiled humanity’s ability to intelligently address the world’s problems. Today, the “two cultures” diagnosis is still valid. In this spirit, a new program called ARTStem, a program of the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts, confronts UNC Tomorrow’s mandate for “global readiness” by spotlighting the need to innovate teaching and learning practices that harness together the power of the arts and STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Anything is possible in the theater. Take the Open Dream Ensemble's two latest productions, which will be have their premieres Thursday at the Stevens Center.

The Open Dream Ensemble, a professional multi-disciplinary children’s theater group, will premiere two new original plays on Thursday, September 3, at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Stevens Center. Both shows are free and open to the public, and the audience is welcome to attend one or both productions.

The Open Dream Ensemble, a professional multi-disciplinary children’s theater group, will preview a new original play on Thursday, August 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Newton-Conover Auditorium in Newton, North Carolina. Tickets are $5 each, seating is general admission and no reservations are necessary.  The Newton-Conover Auditorium is located at 60 West 6th Street in Newton.

Star News, a newspaper out of Wilminton, North Carolina, recently featured two residents who are receipients of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowships at Penland School of Crafts this summer.
